I need more!!

This is a good start to a series, just wish we would have been given just a little bit more to reel the reader in.

Bain is a MMA fighter. Having dealt with loss already in his life, he's motivated in his career by what he has left, his daughter Samantha. Rumer has been beat down and told she'll never make her dreams come true. She's guarded and lives her life by rules, not trusting easily and letting anyone get close to her. When Rumer gets recruited to train at the same gym as Bain, by gym owner and best friend to Bain, Lawson, the two start off on shaky ground. An immediate attraction is felt by each party, but they both realize acting on it would be a bad deal.

I think this is a solid start. I'm interested to find out more about these characters and what fate has in store for them. This is on the short said, maybe more novella length, and although the reader is warned there is a cliffy I found the place where the book left off to be sort of an odd choice. Would definitely read more!

*I was sent this book from the author for an honest review*

What can I say?! I don’t know where to start. This is a fantastic start to this story about Bain and Rumer.
Usually a story eases you into the emotional stuff, but this one jumps right on in. I love when an author throws convention out the door. Bain has worked hard to excel as quick as he has in the fighter world. But he doesn’t do it for himself. He has a great relationship with his manager, a lady named Jade, and those that share the same gym. He has a level of respect and he works hard to keep that respect. He keeps his focus on everything-not allowing anything or anyone come in between what he tries to accomplish for his family.
Until he sees a female fighter kicking a co-workers butt in the gym they share……….
Rumer is a ‘take no s***’, kick-ass woman. She doesn’t hold to convention. She has had her own cynical lessons in life, but her instincts and barriers are there for good reason. She never expected to meet Bain, much less right as she took a kick to the face. She doesn’t know exactly what is happening to her cautiously built walls, but she doesn’t like it one bit.
Could having a bit of fun with Bain get him out of her system, or will it create a monster?

I look forward to reading the follow up ‘Rumer’.

Bain by A L Wood is a short novella telling the story of Bain. He is a MMA fighter who experiences an incident that has changed his life forever. An emotional cripple fighting is his life. Now as his career is taking off an injury has him sidelined. Rumer is a young lady that has been beat down by life. She lives a closed life and refuses to let anyone into her world. Her rules keep her safe from being hurt or disappointed. One day while jogging she is given an opportunity to fulfill a dream of being a MMA. Cautious as she is about accepting help she decides to go to the gym. Since Bain is injured and can’t fight he is to train Rumer. Sparks fly but can 2 damaged people find love. Novellas are not my thing but this book was cute and I liked the characters. I give this story 4 stars. I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

Tales from Arab Lands presents tales from North Africa, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq in the latest volume of the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. This is the third book in the multi-volume series in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg’s timeless classic, Legends of the Jews.

The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives (IFA), named in Honor of Dov Noy, at The University of Haifa, a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now.

Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context.

Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography.

Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition.

This is a very entertaining book with a delightful university-type education

This superb and comprehensive volume not only has sixty legends, moral, humorous and folk tales, it also introduces readers into the world of Jews in Arab lands, the cultures at various times, the histories, and thought processes. These added materials include well informed commentaries on the tales, explanations of terms, comparisons with other Jewish and non-Jewish stories, notes filled with information that will satisfy readers with stronger curiosities, and much more. These materials are a university education, as if readers were taught by the school's most-friendly, articulate, and well-liked professor. The sixty tales probably take up no more than about 150 pages; the other close to 700 pages contain this exemplary and entertaining education.

For example, pages 79-86 have a comprehensive explanation of the biblically mandated counting of days, popularly called "counting of the omer," between Passover and Shavuot. It explains that we really have no idea why this 49 day period was converted into a time of mourning during the middle ages and why a middle day, the thirty-third day of the counting, called lag b'omer, became a happy day in the middle ages. Rabbis, as is well-known, explain that the 49 days was the time that the students of Rabbi Akiva, who participated in the Bar Kochva rebellion against Rome in 132-135 died - some say in a plague, others in battle, the numbers also vary. This is a good homily, but is unlikely. The commentary also reveals similar customs in other countries among non-Jews.

Before this, on pages 71 and 72, the book tells the tale of how Rabbi David Alshqar knew when he would die, used the day to give his friends a final message, a shroud magically appears, his friends dig his grave, he gets in and dies, they cover the grave, walk home, and because the day is Friday and the Shabbat is fast approaching, the sun stands still for them until they reach their homes. In pages 73-79, there is interesting information about the rabbi, the cultural, historical, and literary background to this miracle tale, how both Jews and Arabs give significance to gravesites, about other tales where a person foretells the time of his death, and about miracles, interment, descending into a grave, and about songs sung to commemorate deaths of "holy" men.

Another example is the legend about Rabbi Shelomoh, a very pious man, who runs from Arabs, enters a cave, sees a lion with a thorn in its paw, and pulls it out. This one page tale tells how the thankful lion protects the saint. The commentary discloses similar fables in other cultures, such as the famed "Androcles and the Lion," and how the Irish anti-Christianity playwright George Bernard Shaw used his two-act play "Androcles and the Lion" in 1912 to mock Christianity.

Virtually every fact and every tale is interesting. There is the fact that many Arab saints are really Jewish, but the Arabs took them over and gave the hero an Arab name, and the Jews did the same to the Arabs. There is the tale that threatens the listener that if he shaves and violates what the story teller feels is a biblical prohibition "you will be reincarnated as an ass." There is the story of a resurrection created by a small inanimate Torah scroll that was once taken from the community and brings itself back. The story is followed by a discussion about magic, among other things. There is a fable of how the Baal Shem Tov approached a picture containing Jesus, pulls him out of the picture, and uses him to stop a blood libel against the Jews. The rabbi travels to the picture at warp speed and the commentary discusses, among other matters, other tales of such magical traveling. Some stories have jokes within them, others draw on ancient myths, such as King Solomon and the king of the demons, many have anachronisms, some give comfort, some encourage obedience to Torah laws such as the Sabbath, some take dreams as their theme, or speak of friendship, riddles (such as "which direction does God face?), the evil eye, the court Jew, astrology, the power of a fish, and many others. In short, this is a book that everyone will enjoy and smile about.

Good But Too Generic

Paul Curtis is a music supervisor and knows his business. Not surprisingly, his book is comprehensive and thorough, and if you're looking for an introduction into music licensing, it definitely does a good job. However, for a "handbook" something is missing. For example, you won't find any reviews or even names of websites where you can submit music and it would also be helpful to read about experiences of musicians who have successfully licensed their work. In other words, the information is slightly too generic and anonymous, and as a result, not very exciting to read.

Great for Sports Fans and all other Gay Men!

NOT IN THE NFL will appeal to a wide audience of gay men: those interested in sports, those interested in a modern romance of two hunky men, those who delight in scenes of hot sexual encounters, and those interested in all of the above. NOT IN THE NFL has all the advantages of a well written story from a seasoned author, Terry O'Reilly, whose books span many aspects of the lives of gay men.

The author moves the story without any dull points as the two main characters are forced to face and accept their love for each other and then decide how their relationship will affect their star status careers. This is a good and must read book.

Not in the NFL makes you think.

If you are looking for a sports story about football this is not the book for you. But if you are looking for a book that makes you think about the price a gay athlete would pay if he was outed this book will capture your attention. While there are football scenes, the main story involves the love affair between two players and their struggle to keep it hidden. The romance elements are genuine and the sex is hot.

Wait, what?!

Stretched my incredulity to the breaking point when a supposedly straight man opens his door to another man, lets him kiss him, then proceeds to let him eff (Amazon won't let me spell it out) him, all without a single WTF kind of thought. At first I thought that was a dream, which I thought was a great way for him to start exploring his potential attraction to another man. When it became clear it had actually happened, I couldn't read anymore.

Mountain guide Boukreev tells his version of the events of the May 1996 Mt. Everest disaster, in which five climbers died, in an effort to clear his name of damning allegations made in Jon Krakauer's bestselling Into Thin Air. Boukreev is well known in climbing circles as a good, tough, experienced guide, not especially personable or given to pampering the clients, but utterly reliable, especially in tight situations. So it came as a shock when Krakauer called into question Boukreev's behavior on that fateful day: Why had the guide raced down the mountain before his clients? Was it because he was improperly dressed and climbing without supplemental oxygen? Was it true he ``cut and ran'' when needed most, as charged by a Boukreev client whom Krakauer quotes? Boukreev provides a detailed history of his team's expedition (the book is told as an alternating duet, with Boukreev doing the play-by-play and investigative filmmaker DeWalt handling long swaths of color commentary), of the things that went right on the climb and the many that went wrong, as well as a minute examination of his climbing philosophy. And he successfully parries Krakauer's accusations: He was appropriately dressed and has photos to prove it; he climbs without supplemental oxygen because he feels it makes him stronger, not weaker, especially in situations where oxygen runs out; and, indeed, oxygen was fast running out for his clients, which is why he hurried down, with the consent of his team's leader, to be prepared to ferry tanks back up if needed. Not that the book is without its own glitches, such as inconsistency (``You can receive a lot more information observing the clients' external appearance'' and ``Appearances meant nothing''). A great book detailing the Mountain Madness side of the 1996 Tragedy

After watching the 2015 Everest film I became a sponge for all things about the 1996 Everest tragedy watching 4 documentaries, reading Jon Krakauer and Lou Kasischke's books. Just finished The Climb (TC) a few hours ago and loved it.

For those who do not know this book discuses the 1996 tragedy on Everest that befell two climbing teams. Krakauer's book (into thin air [ITA]) is usually regarded by the public as the main source of what happened on the mountain. In that book Krakauer was critical to Anatoli who then released this book to defend himself and his actions (by not using supplemental oxygen and for descending the mountain rapidly before the team). I felt bad that Anatoli got a bad wrap for 1996 when he risked his own life several times to save other climbers.

This is a great read for any Everest junkies and is really the only main book that shows what happened on the Mountain Madness team (Krakauer and Lou's books are from the other teams POV). The book offers some really good insight into Scott Fischer and the other MM climbers. IMHO it also clearly explain why Anatoli did not use supplemental oxygen as well as why he did a rapid descent.

The first 60% of the book covers 1996. The next chapter details his next expedition back up Everest and how he made make-shift graves for Scott and Yasuko Namba as well as took their small effects to give back to their families. Classy move imho.

The last 30% of the book is a group transcript of the MM group discussing the tragedy shortly after it happened and is a great read.

I am not going to get into who is right or wrong and will let you decide for yourself. All I will say is that this is a great read and if you read Krakauer's book you are only getting 1 side of the story. imo all three books should be read as they are all great reads but also from three distinct POVs.

A very interesting read

I'm not `into' climbing books but I do enjoy reading tales of humans striving against the odds. Having read Jon Krakauers book Into Thin Air about the unfortunate events of the 1996 climbing season on Everest it seemed appropriate to read the account of the same climb by Anatoli Boukreev (written with G. Weston DeWalt).

Those in the know will understand that Krakauer was quite damning of Boukreevs decisions on the climb that saw several deaths amongst climbers and several others permanently damaged by frostbite. This book is in many ways Boukreevs right of reply. Hence it's a book you really should read if you've read Krakauers account to which I'll take the liberty of comparing it to directly for much of this review given they seem somehow intertwined.

As to the book itself: The writing style is not as breezy as the Krakauer work. That books writing style is breezy and easily digested. The Climb on the other hand comes across as more stilted. Now I don't blame Boukreev for that, after all he would have been a native Russian speaker presumably and his real talent seems to have been as a great mountaineer - one of the finest of his generation in fact. So no, it is DeWalt that must bear the brunt of my criticism of pointing out how the book does not flow and demands a more indulgent reader.

The Climb assists the reader with a few useful maps and a clutch of photos that tend to humanise things somewhat. And similarly to the Krakauer book there is plenty of praise for the commitment, bravery and tenacity of many of the members of the various expeditions. There is also a heck of a lot of respect for the simple fact that there is so little margin for error or ill luck in the extreme areas of the planet.

On the other side of the ledger The Climb does enunciate rather well an alternate telling of the events of 1996 and does greatly allow for the reader to get a fuller understanding of some of the issues facing the expedition and the way things unravelled so tragically. The book goes into the thinking of Boukreev who was obviously one of the fittest and most important members of either the Fischer or Hall teams and certainly a man of great bravery and whatever your view of some of his decisions (after reading both books) several people must owe their lives to a quietly stoic and very self contained man who while perhaps not a `people person' took his duties seriously as a matter of personal honour.

One aspect of this work I didn't like was the long epilogue discussing the ongoing feud between Krakauers and Boukreevs telling of events. Boukreev himself succumbed to an avalanche while climbing in Nepal on Christmas Day, 1997. One the one hand his passing should have caused Krakauer to `pull his head in' as we say in Australia, but despite his protestations that it was his duty to do continue to repudiate things Krakauer was saying I couldn't help feeling there was some unsavoury grandstanding going on.

I would heartily recommend anyone who has an interest in climbing works but particularly anybody who has read Into Thin Air. Despite the stilted writing and the long addendum at the end I felt I had a far more rounded understanding of what was at the end of the day a tragic event that showed the power of nature but also the power of the humans contending with it.

Conclusive work, as Anatoli is no longer among us. Gives a magnificent inside view on what it takes to be a high altitude climber that lives to tell the story. G. Weston DeWalt has done a great job here as the (co)writer. The total enterprise from preparations to leaving the site is covered. You do not have to be a mountaineer to be able to read this book, it is all clarified and all points are covered to secure that it would be a clear and gripping story. This is a book to read and re-read. There are but a few books that I keep over mountaineering, this is one. Great read!

The text is a good resource for filter design and supporting circuits, however some of the material is dated. There are a few small errors in formulas, so double check your work.

A great and superbly written book on filters, amps, and circuits

Wow, what a great book! Great coverage on modern network theory, filter designs, networks, LC and active filters, adjustable and amplitude equalizers, operational and linear amplifiers, nonlinear circuits, wavforms, large signal amplifiers, and much more. I'm impressed with the quality of writing and easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams. The book covers both principles and practical design and is a superb book for anyone desiring to learn about analog filters and circuit design. As an author of 15 books myself, and university professor, I highly recommend this book. Nice work! Dan Tomal, Ph.D. Wheaton, IL

A quarter of the way through reading it I went back over it to start making notes because the advice was so good. An example of

I'll start by saying that ive only read 5 books on the subject previous to this because im fairly new to interior design Perhaps that colors my viewpoint somewhat but honestly I just devoured this and cant say ive done that with non fiction books before. Maybe to experienced interior designers some of the advice is redundant and not revolutionary but as someone who has dabbled in home renovation successfully but wants to take it to the next level- this book was well worth buying. He has a really enjoyable writing style where he comes across as far from pretentious and yet very experienced. Some of the advice he gave I had heard of but there was still a lot I picked up. A quarter of the way through reading it I went back over it to start making notes because the advice was so good. An example of a simple tip he gave was to go shopping with your phone...in other words take photos of all the elements you want to buy (furniture, decor, soft furnishings) and then put them on your mood board and play with it to ensure everything works well together before buying a thing. If something sells out before hand it wasn't meant to be. I know that sounds simple and obvious to me now but it completely changed the way I have approached things and as a result I dont get carried away buying decor that doesnt always fit and it ultimately saves money while my overall looks now appear more sophisticated. We may be at different stages of knowledge with interior design but I would think most people would enjoy this book and gain some new tips or perspective

Hyper-detailed instructions—with full color, easy-to-read and understand illustrations—help budding enthusiasts navigate EV3 Kits with clear language and step-by-step directions. Readers learn the basics of assembling a simple robot before being introduced to various programming tricks to be used on the EV3 Brick, the colloquial term for the Mindstorms mini-computer. Be forewarned that in order to take full advantage of the programming functionality of the kit, including the ablity to create and edit programs, users must have a computer to connected to their EV3 Brick (though basic programming on the EV3 Brick can be done without one). Each chapter contains several short challenges, dubbed "discoveries," which are cleverly accompanied by a legend: whimsical gear wheels represent the estimated amount of building time; tiny Microsoft Windows-esque blocks show the expected level of programming expertise; and a small clock estimates the length of time it should take to solve the challenge. Later chapters describe building intricate robots with fun objectives: a racing robot, ANTY (a robotic ant), and the SNATCH3R (complete with a robotic arm that grabs). Perfect intro to Lego robotics

I got the EV3 for my 7 year old son as soon as it came out. By accident, we ended up with the educational version. The instructions provided were not clear enough to get us easily up and running. I started buying other EV3 books. They generally assumed that one had done Mindstorms previously. I just did not have time to help my son figure the thing out, and it sat in a box for months.

Then this book arrived. We are up and running, and my son is engrossed and so am I. The author gives terrific detail, and has small projects scattered through each chapter to help develop understanding of each of the features. We work through a few pages each evening, and do one or two projects (e.g., program the EV3 to do a figure 8). These projects are perfect.

As to the educational version vs the home version..... I splurged and got the expansion set. It turns out that this just has a lot of Technics-type structural pieces. It does not have new motors or sensors. The educational packs has all of the motors and sensors of the home version with two exceptions: the remote control sensor and related beacon. I got those thru the lego site. There may be a few add'l pieces that we'll need in the future to build all of the projects in this book, but we are 1/4 the way thru and haven't found them.

I'd also refer you to the book's website, which has a lot of useful information. The author has also kindly responded to specific questions (relating to education vs home versions), and has been quite helpful. So...can't recommend this more enough. I recommend it to all home users as well as school clubs.

Great book for EV3 and programming!

This is a great book. We have only begun, but it is already fantastic. It is not only information, but it is also a tutorial. The book includes 132 practice modules spread throughout the chapters which allow for an iterative process of learning. Additionally, the book contains 30 design modules that allow you to learn building techniques. My two sons and I (ages 9 and 11) are separately going through the book and practice/design modules with each of us tracking our progress on a tracking sheet. We do the modules individually and then collaborate to see how each of us is accomplishing the task. It's great, but it does still require you to think ahead and be organized. Just by completing a module, you don't necessarily become an expert on that topic. You will find that you will still need to play around with the features to better understand how they work. The first module that will test your understanding of previously introduced capability is Discovery Module #8 which tells you to have your EV3 make a figure 8. I was able to do it with four blocks (in the downloaded EV3 programming software from Lego).
Great book for learning how to use your EV3 and for learning how to program.

Not interesting to my sports & art focused 10 year old

We bought this as a Christmas present for our 10 tear old grandson, having bought the Mindstorms EV3 robotic kit the year before. (https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-6029291-Mindstorms-EV3-31313/dp/B00CWER3XY/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MC1JTP8QH6VEFWKKD024) He never was interested in the kit; we thought this book would peak his interest. It didn't.

They looked fascinating to me, but his interests just don't go that way. Maybe when he is older.
