Seb and the dragons are great (3.5 stars)

Agathea Flamma is a snob. She’s also quite a brat. I tried very hard to give her the benefit of the doubt at the start of this book, since she’s high born and has probably never mixed much with hardworking commoners and all – but she kept on with her haughty thinking, believing Seb stupid and slow and dirty long past the point when she should have known better, and I wanted to push her off a dragon, quite frankly. Especially when she is exceptionally slow on the uptake herself at times.

Luckily for the sake of this book and my reading enjoyment, Seb is lovely. He’s a nice guy, he loves and appreciates his dragon, he works hard and he never gets too upset with all the awful, brattish kids around him who act more like they’re thirteen than eighteen. Which is a bit of a problem in this book. None of them act their age, so this is a book more suitable for Middle Grade readers than YA.

Beyond that this story is about what you’d expect with this description and this genre. There are dragons, there are people learning to ride them, there are some myths and legends, there is an ancient enemy, there are trials, social issues and of course a few enemies here and there. It’s all in here and it’s all fun and interesting, if a little irritating at times (Thea).

However, Seb and Thea are both lacking in back story and development. They don’t really change much throughout this book, except that they suddenly start working together at one point. It would have been lovely to have known a bit more about both their pasts in proper detail, rather than Thea pouting because her parents want to marry her off and Seb being a work horse to his alcoholic father. The plot is also pretty fast moving and there are some time jumps. I would have preferred a bit more detail on their actual training – away from the fighting and the first few flying lessons there isn’t any – and I’d have loved to have seen the reaction when they returned after helping another dragon during a trial.

So it’s not perfect or particularly unexpected. I would have loved a bit more from the dragons (but then I will always say this because I love dragons) and the world was a bit too generic for me (the north is simply called the north – but how far away is it? What’s the climate like here? What are the other countries like that don’t have dragons? And why don’t they have dragons too?). The characters have potential and the old enemy seems like one that will keep recurring long enough for a series. In all I enjoyed reading it, there was nothing about it I really didn’t like, but then there was nothing I loved either. I’d be happy enough to read more, if I happened upon the next book some day.

I wanted to like it and finish it but I could not. The main character is awful, I get it she is a snob but at some point you think she would start to be nice to Seb whom I liked. But no as soon as you think she is going to be kind to him she accuses him of being a drunk, and that is when I deleted the book and could not read anymore.
If someone wanted to be a dragon rider so badly you would think they'd like or try to bond with the dragon instead of mostly ignoring her and being embarrassed when Seb pays attention to the dragon. The writing was not bad and the plot had potential but, I just could not finish it and I tried.

Low Fantasy setting with Dragons

Overall it is a fun and quick read. You have two primary characters (Seb & Thea) and the point of view switches between them throughout the book. Which I feel was handled well and helped drive things forward giving you an attachment to both of them. Thea comes from a one of the oldest Noble families in the country, and though the character is annoying sometimes they are true to their background. Seb is your standard nice kid from a poor background troupe, the upside he actually sucks at things he should suck at (I loved how the author thought through a lot of the setting/plot to make believable). Besides Seb & Thea you have the female Dragon, who like other Dragons in this setting chooses 2 riders (Navigator & Protector) unlike most fantasy stories where they choose just one. The Dragon is not developed as much as Seb and Thea, though there is some minor character development for her.

During the course of the book Thea develops the most emotionally as her personality and world view come into question. Seb develops the most special power wise, as he has a once in a generation knack that allows him better communication with Dragons. It really does not come into play until near the end of the book, and actually slowly develops throughout the book so no surprises in it. There is no magic users/spells in this setting. In fact half a dozen magic items/artifacts are the only “magical” anything discussed in the story.

In the area of world building the overall setting appears to be a Late Middle Ages/Renaissance setting in an isolationist country Torvald (Which appears to be a City State similar to the Italian ones in history, i.e. a city plus the sounding county side) with Dragons as their “Air Force.” They do have a ground army, which is briefly mentioned and most likely viewed as an afterthought by the monarchy anyway. No other nations are mentioned though both the Northern and Southern regions outside the city state are briefly touched on. The current big bad comes from the Northern region. It is relatively good thing the country is isolationist as otherwise their neighbors would form a coalition against it out of fear as Torvald appears to have a monopoly on “willing” Dragons.

There are two other items I loved, and hits on something I mentioned above about how the author thought through the setting/plot to make it believable. The first is in the setting Torvald has been flying Dragons for centuries. So, they have an entire infrastructure built up around supporting Dragon flight. I loved that, as that is exactly what would happen. If your country had been flying Dragons you would have things like special signal communications for the flyers and aerial maps. All of which this setting has. The other thing is there is fight scene that actually played out realistically and not in a “Hollywood” fashion. Basically, you had Thea a teenage girl who is a trained swordsmen vs an Adult male who is an experienced swordsmen who has both a reach and strength advantage over Thea. This is not some fencing duel with rules, but an honest fight to the death. Therefore, the realistic result occurred, and not some contrived “Hollywood” feel good but unrealistic result.

Things for the next book I would love to see: Maybe see/meet the “Blue Dragon” Seb saw 5 years before he was chosen. I have a feeling that Dragon almost choose Seb too, but passed him as he was too young. More info on the neighboring countries. Some might of them might like Torvald, others scared of Torvald, and a few jealous of it… Even being isolationist is not going offset the “fear” that Torvald might become aggressive in the future.

Very good read

If you're looking for a comprehensive political and economic history of the Caribbean, look no further. I bought this book to read before and during a trip to the US Virgin Islands, and it did not disappoint. It's a little dry at times and gets bogged down in stats and figures, but overall, it's worth the effort. Williams finishes it up with a nice thesis summary in the last chapter. FYI, this book only runs through the late 60s, so don't expect to read about anything after that.

If you're into this type of thing it's well written

Heads up: The book contains a lot of sex from beginning to end and deals with bestiality. Not my cup of tea but kudos to the author.

A Twisted Adult Read

What a fascinatingly twisted fiction short! This unique fiction short brims with all manners of sexual proclivity and depravity as it delves into various manner of sexual liaisons. With this book, author Niquenya D.Fulbright has tread fearlessly into the varied panoramas of debauched sexual scenarios, stimulation and satisfaction that many will fear to tread but may enjoy reading about. There were some minor editing issues but the overall work was a decent read. Definitely recommend this book as a very adult read, especially for those adult readers with the sexual proclivity to push boundaries.

Twisted so good...

This was an awesome twisted read. If you like off the wall weirdness involved sex, then this book is for you. My mindset in so many different ways. Leaning is a grade A freak and Mr. Weller just indulges her in every way.

Getting old

I have all copies in hardcovers and bought the last three through ebay. I took a beginning French class and am now attempting to read them with the help of google translate. Hoping that eventually the author will take pity on her fan readers and have the last three and last one in progress translated to English. Come on Madame Anne. I'm getting old waiting

East meets West onstage

If you liked the segments of the film "The Joy Luck Club" which took place in China, you'll love David Henry Hwang's play "Golden Child." Although Hwang is probably better known for his play "M. Butterfly," "Golden Child" is a remarkable piece of writing which deserves attention. According to the production history included in the book version, an early version of "Golden Child" premiered in 1996, and a later version was presented at Broadway's Longacre Theatre in 1998. But "Golden Child" is also one of those plays which succeeds purely as a readers' text.
"Golden Child" opens with Andrew, a Westernized man of Chinese heritage, who is visited by the ghost of his Chinese-born mother. This brief prologue leads to the story of his mother's girlhood in China. We meet Andrews's grandfather, Tieng-Bin; Tieng-Bin's three wives; and the Western clergyman who seeks to convert them to Christianity.
"Golden Child" is a thought-provoking exploration of family life and cross-cultural contact. There is both humor and tragedy in the dialogue. The story addresses such topics as polygamy, foot-binding, ancestor worship, and opium use in traditional Chinese culture. Hwang's ironic portrayal of the politics of "conversion" may be a revelation to those Western Christians who harbor romantic, idealistic notions about bringing the "light" to non-European peoples. I was very impressed with Hwang's writing, and I highly recommend "Golden Child."

A highly underrated masterpiece

I will never understand why this play tanked in New York. It is a simple, elegant tale about assimilation and familial dysfunction. David Henry Hwang is a masterful writer, and this is some of his best work. The only weakness is its ending, which falls a little flat as a character (who is clearly the author) explains the entire point, as if the audience missed it. Although this (like most of his work) is about Chinese, it should be read by people of all walks of life.

Virtually Flawless

I don't normally read plays. I always feel as if I will be missing something by reading the script rather than seeing it performed. After reading David Henry Hwang's "Golden Child", however, I am hoping that I will one have the opportunity to see this play in person.

Hwang mentions in the introduction that "Golden Child" underwent several rewrites until the final draft was completed. The end product, to me, is utterly flawless. A perfect mesh of comedy and tragedy unfolds as Hwang confronts the effects a man's conversion to Christianity has in early 20th century China.

A very captivating read, I highly recommend David Henry Hwang's "Golden Child".

A good survey of Canada's contribution

Canada's contribution to the Allied war effort in WWII is often overlooked, especially when considering army and air campaigns. Indeed, a good many Canadians served in the British military instead of the Canadian (especially the RAF), and they get lost in the shuffle. Contrasted against that, however, is the fact that the Canadian army had a D-Day beach to itself (Juno), and this army played a major role in the continental campaign that followed (just ask the Dutch and Belgians), not to mention the previous battles in Italy. This book helps to fill the gap in nicely, if in less detail than I would have liked. It is obvious that Bercusen has studied his material. The addition of some photos was a nice touch. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Canada's contribution in the "last great war." I look forward to reading his offering on Canada's effort in the Korean War (Blood on the Hills).

Canada Takes on the Axis

A very readable and enjoyable book on Canada's participation in WW2. The author wastes no time about domestic and home front issues, believing rightly, these have been covered extensively elsewhere. In general the work is critical of the command structure and organization that sent Canadian forces to war.

The Canadian Navy for the first half of the battle of the Atlantic was woefully unprepared to deal with U-Boats and convoy escourting. Short sightediness and desperation sent these ill-eqipped RCN vessels on patrol in the Atlantic, where they could barely defend the convoys entrusted to them. Over time the RCN gained expereince, training, and better gear, but it was a difficult process with the U-boats scoring hits in Canadian home waters right up to the end of the war.

The RCAF enters the conflict only marginally better off than the RCN. Pilots are trained and many RCAF personel end up flying directly in the RAF, thereby depriving many nascent RCAF sqadrons of their expertise and numbers. Over time the Canadian squadrons become adept in their place within Bomber Command, and their contrinution to the Allied bombing effort while perhaps controversial, became no less significant.

The chapters dealing with the Canadian army must wait until later in the book as these forces do not become engaged until late 1943. In general the author is highly critical of the sluggish command structure which tends to insist on set piece battles with little room for initative. In Italy the Canadian 5th armored division is prevented from exploiting what could have become a major breakthrough because of sluggish command control.

Canadian higher command suffers from the British tendency of fighting in very set-piece fashion. This often prevents taking advantage of the very good fighting qualities of the Canadian infantry who create tactical opportunities that are often sqaundered by their commanders.

In all a very readable work that is often highly critical of allied strategy and tactics. While seeing Canadian short-commings the author points out how faulty assumptions by US commanders before D-Day would see raw US infantry trying to over-come strong German beach defenses with little or no armor support. This would cost them dearly at Omaha. A different look indeed on how the US manages the war in a somewhat heavy-handed fashion. Montgomery's plodding advance before the Falise encirclement allows additional German forces to escape the pocket, and again prevents Canadian breakthrough opportunities.

Seen in the context of the over all Allied effort Canada's contribution appears significant. The constant concern of Canadian politicians is that their forces maintain independence of command, and not simple incorporation as just another commonwealth element in the British war effort. For the most part Canada succeeds in these goals, and the nation fields over five large divisions to play its part in the European theater of operations.

This book provides not only a sound description of Canada's efforts in WW2, but also a good look at the conflict as a whole. The difficulties of coalition warfare come to the fore. When a middle sized nation is part of two larger nations it risks being taken over in its efforts by both senior partners. This was very much Canada's problem, and this book shows how difficult it can be for a smaller nation in such alliances. Readers should find this book worthwhile in the different perspective and good over all historical context it provides of WW2.

Bercuson draws a fine line between being overly patriotic about the actions of Canadian forces during the Second World War and giving a realistic and factual overview of the actions of the Army, Navy, Air Force and political forces behind them. Bercuson certainly has a way with words; as a former student of his to this I can attest. Although not a piece to be looked upon for research material in an upper level history course, it offers young history students and anyone interested in the topic a detailed, provocative perspective of the somewhat forgotten history of Canada during WW2.

Where there is no sin, there can be no salvation.

As a child, adolescent, young man, and, yes, even as an adult, there stood ever before me one whose teachings and opinions guided my life. Although short in physical stature and of limited formal education, this man was and always will remain a giant in my eyes. In fact, my admiration and respect for him and that for which he stood grows greater with each passing day. That man was my Dad.
In his book, The Vanishing Conscience, John MacArthur, Jr. reiterates those teachings which I have both loved and hated throughout the majority of my life. My Dad, from my earliest recollection, taught my brother and I that regardless of what those around us might say or do, we were always, always to do that which we knew to be the right thing to do. We were instructed that we were, as individuals, personally responsible for that which we spoke, did, even thought and felt. There was made no mention of self-esteem, of political correctness, of compromise, of shades of gray; the moral rainbow consisted solely of two colors: white and black (right and wrong). That truth exists today as it has always existed, despite mankind's attempts to philosophize it into oblivion.
In this, the latter portion of the twentieth century, it has become fashionable to preach the gospel of self-esteem while eschewing the principle of personal responsibility. Psychology and Science appear to be able to place the blame for any deviant, aberrant, bizarre and/or socially unacceptable behavior on virtually anything or anyone excepting, and thereby pardoning, the individual who commits the breach of what was once considered reasonable behavior. Nothing and no one is safe from the finger of reproach with the single exception of the perpetrator. Perhaps the individual in question was abused as a child, was reared in poverty, deprived of love, and so on and so forth, ad infinitum. Blame, guilt, and retribution have given way to pity, leniency, and forgiveness.
Where there were once credible norms, there now flutters in the societal winds an increasing tendency toward latitude and acceptance, regardless of the malignity of the act and the resulting impact on society as a whole. It seems that no behavior is to be demonstrated that is worthy of personal blame or public condemnation. The perpetrator of a crime has now become the victim while, alas, the true victim receives but cursory and transient empathy with no attendant justice nor equitable recompense.
Has this policy of moral liberality proven of benefit to society? One has but to peruse the daily newspapers to be made painfully aware that this standard of personal blamelessness has, to the contrary, proven empirically to be an abject and abysmal failure. Personal bankruptcies rise each year in a society where per capita income and personal standards of living have also risen. Murders, rapes, tortures, muggings, arsons, drug usage have increased at an alarming rate during this same period of improved self-esteem and public acceptance, liberality, and forgiveness.
In The Vanishing Conscience, MacArthur addresses, from a biblical perspective, the issues of self-esteem, personal guilt, and individual responsibility. How does modern psychology's obsession with personal forgiveness, high self-esteem, and the love of self stand in the light of Holy Scripture? What became of the little word sin with all of its grave implications, ramifications, and negative connotations? In an age of self-absolution, it would appear that Jesus Christ suffered and died in vain, for, if we are to believe the modern self-proclaimed and self-ordained prophets of the "feel good" philosophy, we are to forgive, each his or her own, transgressions and iniquities by blaming our environment, our genetic predisposition, our parents, our teachers, our political leaders, our role models, anything or anyone but our individual selves.
The Vanishing Conscience is an extraordinarily germane work in that MacArthur not only elucidates the church's adoption and endorsement of this secular abomination as well as the inherent dangers of this heretical philosophy, but does so in such a manner that the reader is made knowledgeable of that which a just God demands of His children. Of far greater importance than self-esteem is our relationship to a God who will hold you and I accountable for each act, thought, word, and deed.
On that Great and Terrible Day, conscience may be either a dear friend or a damning foe, but it will not claim neutrality. Self-esteem, that placebo of modern psychology, will not be a factor.
