Awesome Book - Funny and Creative, Great for All Ages!
By TheJerseyMomma
There is a reason why this is the number one best seller in Amazon children's Minecraft books, and I'm here to tell you why! Obviously the premise of the story is based on the Wimpy Kid series, so you're basically getting a point-of-view story in diary form. The chapters are broken down into days and are short and easy to read. They're told from Zombie's point of view, who is middle school aged and introduces us to all of his friends (who are also Mobs like him). You'll meet Skelly, Creepy, and Zombie's whole family (even his little ankle biting brother). There are little black and white pictures scattered throughout, so it breaks up the story and makes it more entertaining for the reader. Zombie is a very likable character, not scary or frightening at all. There is nothing gory (but some gross mentions of boogers and such). Zombie tells about his daily life as a Mob and about his human friend, Steve. You might find some typos throughout the book, but nothing awful (that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). My son is 6 and could probably read these on his own (he's a strong reader) but he preferred having it read aloud to him. And I must say, I enjoyed reading it, too! There were some cute and funny parts that made me chuckle out loud (you will especially appreciate it if you are an adult Minecraft fan). I particularly appreciated that the author kept the storyline light and funny, and that almost all ages could appreciate it. Some of the other Minecraft fiction out there is not geared toward the younger crowd, but this one, in my opinion, is safe for everyone. I also have to add that we were given a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for a fair review, but I went ahead and purchased another copy for myself as well as book 4 in the series for my son - we loved it that much! Definitely worth reading, and it's a great price, you can't beat it.

A zombie who has troubles at schools and goes on a couple of adventures.

How old do you need to be to read it?
Uhhhh....probably....4 or 5 to maybe about 11 or 12. Actually probably more like 11.

Is there any bad language or violence in it?
From what I can remember, no.

Is it funny?
Yes.

What did you like most about it?
It was fun to read.

Was it difficult to read?
No. It was pretty easy.

Would you recommend it to your friends?
Probably.

Why?
Because I know they like that kind of thing.

What kind of thing?
Like...diaries.

Diaries? And Minecraft?
Yes.

What else?
Idunno.

Not Good...
By Mole555
Just because a book uses terms and characters from Minecraft doesn't necessarily make it any GOOD. I know this book is geared towards young readers, but as a teacher who uses Minecraft EDU in schools, I was not impressed. The writing is terrible, the plot is weak, and the book contains NO paragraphs. Instead it's just a string of poorly constructed sentences. Kids are smarter than this type of writing, give them more credit to actually READ a story with paragraphs, character development, and plot lines.

In this anthology, Thomas Kochman includes articles which reflect an awareness of black culture norms. In portraying and analyzing the communicative habits and expressive lifestyle of adult urban blacks, Kochman hopes to disclose the 'inside' sociocultural view: what urban black people themselves see and value in their life situations. He has selected articles that not only describe specific communicative behavior, but reproduce the actual contexts in which such behavior occurs: the street, the clubhouse, the shoeshine stand, the park, the pool hall, the cafe.

This anthology includes: NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION: Nonverbal Communication among Afro-Americans: An Initial Classification (Cooke) * Black culture on black terms: a rejection of the social pathology model (Baratz) * Black folk music (Sithole) * Motion and feeling through music (Keil) * Dynamics of a black audience (Williams)

VOCABULARY AND CULTURE: Names, graffiti, and culture (Hinton & Kohl) * The language of soul (Claude Brown) * The vocabulary of race (Ken Johnson) * 'Inversion' in black communication (Holt) * the kinetic element in black idiom (Kochman) * The African element in American English (Dalby)

EXPRESSIVE USES OF LANGUAGE: Stylin' outta the black pulpit (Holt) * Street talk (H. Rap Brown) * Shoe-shine on 634d (Maryland) * Joking: the training of the man of words in talking broad (Abrahams) * Toward an ethnography of black American speech behavior (Kochman) * Rules for ritual insults (Labov) * Signifying, loud-talking, and marking (Mitchell-Kernan) * Black poetry...where it's at (Rodgers)

EXPRESSIVE ROLE BEHAVIOR: Roles and ideologies (Keiser) * The greaser is a 'bad ass'; the gowster is a 'muthah': an analysis of two urban youth roles (Ellis and Newman) * Aspiration (Brookins) * Foreword from 'Pimp: The Story of My Life' (Iceberg Slim) * The game (Woodie King, Jr.) * Lovers and exploiters (Elliot Liebow) * The hustling ethic (Julius Hudson)

The Only Sales Guide You'll Ever Need, by Anthony Iannarino

The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.

Anthony Iannarino never set out to become a salesman, let alone a sales manager, speaker, coach, or writer of the most prominent blog about the art and science of great selling. He fell into his profession by accident, as a day job while pursuing rock-and-roll stardom.

Once he realized he'd never become the next Mick Jagger, Iannarino turned his focus to a question that's been debated for at least a century: Why are a small number of salespeople in any field hugely successful, while the rest get mediocre results at best?

The answer is simple: it’s not about the market, the product, or the competition—it’s all about the seller. And consequently, any salesperson can sell more and better, all the time.

Over twenty-five years, Iannarino has boiled down everything he's learned and tested into one convenient book that explains what all successful sellers, regardless of industry or organization, share: a mind-set of powerful beliefs and a skill-set of key actions, including...

·Self-discipline: How to keep your commitments to yourself and others.
·Accountability: How to own the outcomes you sell.
·Competitiveness: How to embrace competition rather than let it intimidate you.
·Resourcefulness: How to blend your imagination, experience, and knowledge into unique solutions.
·Storytelling: How to create deeper relationships by presenting a story in which the client is the hero and you're their guide.
·Diagnosing: How to look below the surface to figure out someone else's real challenges and needs.

Once you learn Iannarino's core strategies, picking up the specific tactics for your product and customers will be that much easier. Whether you sell to big companies, small companies, or individual consumers, this is the book you'll turn to again and again for proven wisdom, strategies, and tips that really work.

The BEST Sales Book I've EVER Read!
By Keith Nerdin
[[VIDEOID:22d1ba31ddf35ad5266a75b75cea91c7]] As someone who has edited and published a few books for different authors and also as someone who has read dozens and dozens of books on the topic of sales, I have to say, this book was a HUGE surprise! I've been a periodic reader of Anthony’s blog and watched a few of the interviews he did with Selling Power magazine and as such, I thought I had him pegged. I thought I knew what I was in for with his book. But I was wrong. Holy crap! Anthony’s book is freakin incredible! I'm truly blown away at how beautifully and brilliantly it's structured. I went into it thinking there wasn't really much new to be said about sales and was frankly expecting more of a creative repackaging of familiar concepts and strategies. Wrong again. I was delightfully surprised at how many times I was surprised—caught off guard by a truly fresh and inspired perspective or nugget of wisdom.

But what I think I was least prepared for was the absolute mastery he conveys in terms of his framework and vocabulary. Each step, each word, is so clearly used with such deliberate intent. It's abundantly clear that he has spent a ridiculous amount of time fine-tuning these components, or elements as they’re referred to in the book, over the years! He knows exactly how each one builds off of and depends on the another. He conveys the sequence of development with unwavering confidence and they never feel forced or fluffed. He doesn’t just make clever connections. He makes bold, authoritative declarations of how things absolutely do work—not theories or philosophies of what might be true. And I’m telling you, it’s 100% credible and believable.

Anthony’s style of writing in this book is so clean, tidy, stripped down, and packed with power. I know what an almost unimaginable amount of work, editing, and rewriting it takes to get a manuscript to this level. So HUGE congrats to Anthony for having the humility and patience to be open to and accept what was no doubt an insane amount of feedback and critiquing.

So...I'm going out on a limb here. I’m going to say that due to the level of truly expert craftsmanship, fresh insight, and succinct power contained in this book, I’m giving it the label of...THE best sales book I've ever read. I thought long and hard before making such a declaration. But it’s one I full-heartedly stand by. I really do believe it's just that good.

Anthony, I’m SO glad you've written this book and truckloads of kudos to you for doing such a fabulous job of pulling it all together!

Now as a little bonus at the end of my review, I mentioned how clearly and concisely Anthony writes, right? Well to help illustrate that, I’m going to share with you my Top 40 favorite quotes from the book. And each one is concise enough to fit in a tweet--140 characters or less and should give you a quick, yet comprehensive sense of the lessons contained in this book. Here they are, starting at number 40 and counting down to my favorite:

40 - Your contacts may not remember anything from your slide deck, but they will remember your stories.
39 - To succeed in sales, you must develop the necessary relationships before you need them.
38 - Self-discipline is essential to sales success. Your good intentions are worthless unless they are coupled with disciplined action.
37 - In sales, nurturing can be defined as “creating value before you claim any.”
36 - Great negotiating is not about winning; it’s about creating agreement despite conflicting needs.
35 - What concerned your parents should now concern you because the people you spend time with can build you up or pull you down.
34 - Put prospecting first. You can’t cram prospecting. It must be a daily discipline. Block out time every day for this activity.
33 - Prospecting is a campaign, not an event. It’s a series of “touches” that lead to a conversation and an opportunity to meet.
32 - Respect your competitors and believe they are every bit as good as you are.
31 - The antidote to complacency is initiative. Initiative is irrefutable evidence that you care about your customers.
30 - There is no way to rush relationships, and there is no way to rush trust.
29 - Stories are compelling. They move ideas out of the realm of the theoretical and into the real world.
28 - If you call to ask your prospective client “if anything has changed,” you will immediately identify yourself as a time waster.
27 - In sales, you must continually open new relationships. Remember, no opportunity is ever closed that hasn’t first been opened.
26 - If you don’t tackle problems quickly and directly, you’ll be replaced as surely as you replaced the salesperson before you.
25 - Your job is to create and sell a compelling case for change and then manage and lead that change.
24 - Self-discipline is the fundamental attribute of all successful people. It allows them to take action even when they don’t want to.
23 - Failure is simply an event. It doesn’t define you or your future.
22 - If you want to ruin your career in sales, just start saying, “It can’t be done.”
21 - When you hold yourself to a higher standard than anyone else can imagine, you always soar above the mark that others have set for you.
20 - Choose to be a leader. Take responsibility for producing results, for helping your clients create the outcomes you sold them.
19 - If you can’t devise a win-win agreement, you must walk away. This is the price of being a professional, of being a trusted adviser.
18 - Eliminate distractions. When it’s time for you to do your prospecting, turn off your e-mail, the Internet, and your smartphone. Focus.
17 - It is 100 percent your responsibility to grow, to develop yourself both personally and professionally.
16 - A “no” is not failure. It’s information.
15 - Being grateful is one of the most empowering choices you can make.
14 - Sales is all about gaining commitments from your prospects. But the most important commitments are those you make to yourself.
13 - Don’t wait. Initiate. Set yourself in motion and seize the initiative. Be productive, engaged, and innovate.
12 - When you know you are doing the right thing, the outcome of the sale matters less.
11 - Most people don’t fail because they can’t do something. They fail because they aren’t willing to do what it takes to succeed.
10 - Reframe setbacks and obstacles as feedback that helps you make adjustments. Then try again.
9 - In basketball, the game is over when the buzzer sounds. There is no buzzer in sales… because the game never ends.
8 - The hard-sell closing techniques of the past may be dead, but the need to ask for commitments from the client is not.
7 - The ability to think on your feet is no excuse for being unprepared.
6 - The more desperate you are to fill your pipeline with opportunities, the more difficult it is to do so.
5 - Your clients are not looking for a vendor. They want a partner who will charge into battle and tip the balance in their favor.
4 - Small salespeople ask weak questions.
3 - Negativity is the only cancer that spreads by contact.
2 - It’s a simple truth: the more you care about your customer’s results, the better your own results will be.
1 - Finish this sentence: “I sell ____.” If you answered with anything other than “outcomes,” you are wrong.

And that’s it. The title to Anthony’s book is about as bold as they come. But it may in fact, be just that. I wholeheartedly recommend picking up your own copy and seeing for yourself whether or not this is indeed, “The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need.”

Perhaps the Best Book of the Year
By James Muir
Having been in sales for three decades now I tend to favor books that specialize in a specific area. However, every now and then a broad scope book comes along that really hits the bull’s eye over a broad scope – Anthony Iannarino’s The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need is just such a book.

One of the things that makes Anthony’s book noteworthy is an acknowledgment that our mind-set is foundational for success in selling. When we master our beliefs and behaviors we free ourselves to achieve the level of success we desire. The Only Sales Guide acknowledges this by devoting the first half of the book to this subject.

It would have been easy to generically address the area of mind-set by offering up something in area of attitudes and desire but Anthony’s book goes beyond that by breaking down mind-set into ten components that are crucial for sales professionals. Each of these is given serious treatment and this whole section is like a personal achievement book unto itself.

Here are the mind-set areas Anthony addresses in the book:

- Self-Discipline
- Optimism
- Caring
- Competitiveness
- Resourcefulness
- Initiative
- Persistence
- Communication
- Accountability
- Influence

In the final area (influence) Anthony sums up using all of the elements to maximize influence. It is the mastery of all these areas combined that creates true influence. Lifelong attentions to these areas will make you truly great and a powerful influence for good among others.

The second half of the book is devoted to the specific skills sales professionals must be proficient at in order to succeed. The importance of being skilled in our craft reminds me of the saying by Thomas Fuller that “It is skill, not strength, that governs a ship.” So appropriately here we turn our focus on honing our craft.

This section begins with a reminder that sales is service. “Selling isn’t something you do to someone. It’s something you do for and with someone.” What follows is an excellent discussion of ten commitments each salesperson needs in order to serve their customers. I hope Anthony won’t mind if I summarize here:

- The Commitment of Time
- The Commitment to Explore
- The Commitment to Change
- The Commitment to Collaborate
- The Commitment to Build Consensus
- The Commitment to Invest
- The Commitment to Review Your Proposed Solution
- The Commitment to Resolve Concerns
- The Commitment to Decide
- The Commitment to Execute

This wholesome philosophy frames-up and paves the way for all the skills to come.

The section on skills contains solid and practical advice on eight skill areas – three of which are very special and unique to this book. The skill areas addressed are:

- Closing
- Prospecting
- Storytelling
- Diagnosing
- Negotiating
- Business Acumen
- Change Management
- Leadership

Anthony offers very insightful advice on the importance of these skills as well as their execution.

In the last three skills, (Business Acumen, Change Management & Leadership) Anthony covers new ground that to my knowledge, has not been covered in a sales work before. These are higher-level skills that are more challenging to master but are essential for sales professionals that seek to insure their clients and customers realize the full benefits of the solutions they offer. This is absolutely refreshing and raises the bar on where our minds should be when interacting with customers.

I was confident that I would enjoy this book because I very much enjoy Anthony Iannarino’s style of writing on The Sales Blog. What I didn’t expect is how timeless the material in this work is. Anthony has managed to encapsulate all of the core facets of professional selling in a surprisingly short number of pages. The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need is personal achievement meets professional selling. It’s both practical and inspiring. 5 Stars.

The most comprehensive book on sales & sales success written this decade
By Mike Weinberg | Consultant, Speaker, Author
I've been reading Anthony's blog posts for six years, and I've written publicly before that he's my #1 Go-To Sales Guru. He’s the first person I turn to for sales help, and he is the only one I turned to when my most sophisticated client needed perspective and assistance on a very complex sales issue.

Like many of you in the sales community, I have known about this book for a long time and been anxiously awaiting its release.
I provided the foreword for The Only Sales Guide You'll Ever Need so I've read it several times. It's not an exaggeration to declare that this is the most comprehensive sales book written this decade. Here are just a few excerpts from the foreword:

"You won’t find many books like this or authors willing to share the hard truth. Instead of telling you what you want to hear and offering yet another “get rich quick” or “lose weight while doubling your carbohydrate intake without exercise” scheme, Anthony pulls back the covers to expose deeper truths about who wins big in sales, why they win, and how they do it..."

"In The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need, Anthony tackles a crucial, central question. And honestly, this really is the only relevant question:
Why do a few highly successful salespeople consistently outperform their peers?"

“This book is built on a critical premise: Contrary to what most underperformers claim, sales success is not situational. No, it’s not about the market, the product, the company, or the competition. It is all about the seller – the individual."

"Anthony doesn’t hold back the good stuff. The first chapter of The Only Sales Guide You’ll Ever Need jumps right into the deep end to look at the importance of self-discipline and what he calls “me management.” Do not skip ahead or blow through this chapter."

"Once you’ve read through Anthony’s master class on mind-set in part 1, you’ll tackle skills development in part 2, which is as powerful as it is practical. While the attributes, attitudes, and behaviors taught in part 1 position you to win in sales, the skills revealed in part 2 show you not only how to effectively execute the sales attack but also to win decisively. Anthony leaves no stone unturned, looking at all the essential elements, ranging from prospecting (opening relationships) to closing (gaining commitments) and everything in between."

"Anthony makes the strong case that to succeed today, we need to be more than just great salespeople. We must become great businesspeople. He shares valuable tips to increase your business acumen and set you apart in your clients’ eyes. He also ensures that you understand the importance of building consensus and how to navigate your dream client’s organization - connecting with various stakeholders so you can masterfully quarterback and advance your best opportunities down the field to score.

If you're a sales professional who wants to up your game, this book is for you. And if you badly want to become a true sales professional who wins big and wins for the long-term, this is The Guide you need.

Tap Dancing to Work: Warren Buffett on Practically Everything, 1966-2013From Portfolio

Warren Buffett built Berkshire Hathaway into something remarkable— and Fortune journalist Carol Loomis had a front-row seat for it all.

When Carol Loomis first mentioned a little-known Omaha hedge fund manager in a 1966 Fortune article, she didn’t dream that Warren Buffett would one day be considered the world’s greatest investor—nor that she and Buffett would quickly become close personal friends. As Buffett’s fortune and reputation grew over time, Loomis used her unique insight into Buffett’s thinking to chronicle his work for Fortune, writing and proposing scores of stories that tracked his many accomplishments—and also his occasional mistakes.

Now Loomis has collected and updated the best Buffett articles Fortune published between 1966 and 2012, including thirteen cover stories and a dozen pieces authored by Buffett himself. Loomis has provided commentary about each major article that supplies context and her own informed point of view. Readers will gain fresh insights into Buffett’s investment strategies and his thinking on management, philanthropy, public policy, and even parenting. Some of the highlights include:

  • The 1966 A. W. Jones story in which Fortune first mentioned Buffett.
  • The first piece Buffett wrote for the magazine, 1977’s “How Inf lation Swindles the Equity Investor.”
  • Andrew Tobias’s 1983 article “Letters from Chairman Buffett,” the first review of his Berkshire Hathaway shareholder letters.
  • Buffett’s stunningly prescient 2003 piece about derivatives, “Avoiding a Mega-Catastrophe.”
  • His unconventional thoughts on inheritance and philanthropy, including his intention to leave his kids “enough money so they would feel they could do anything, but not so much that they could do nothing.”
  • Bill Gates’s 1996 article describing his early impressions of Buffett as they struck up their close friendship.

Scores of Buffett books have been written, but none can claim this work’s combination of trust between two friends, the writer’s deep understanding of Buffett’s world, and a very long-term perspective.

Financial Tortoise Trounces Flashy Hares
By Keith Wheelock
In 2008, when Warren Buffett had a down period in a 10-year performance bet between his choice (Vanguard's Admiral shares) and a hedge fund, he said: "I just hope that Aesop was right when he envisaged the tortoise overtaking the hare." In fact, he has been a spectacularly successful financial tortoise for over 50 years in good and hairy times.

This is a remarkable book about a remarkable investor AND person. Carol Loomis, my favorite FORTUNE writer for over 40 years, has been professionally and personally close to Warren Buffett for nearly two generations.

In recent years Warren Buffett has been widely acknowledged as the Oracle of Omaha. CEOs flock to seek his advice. His self-deprecating annual Berkshire-Hathaway annual letters (gently edited by Loomis) have become classics of understated financial wisdom. He is regularly ranked among the three richest individuals in the world, along with Bill Gates, his good friend. Recently his and the Gates' personal philanthropy has been at a stratospheric level that make Andrew Carnegie and J. D. Rockefellers look like charitable pikers.

Who is this Buffett fellow, who first merited a modest FORTUNE mention in 1966? What is the secret of his financial wizardry? When and how did he discover his magical financial elixir? To what extent has he adhered to this over the past two generations and more?

Virtually every book that I've read about successful businessmen or investors tells the story within the context of their recent success. Instead, Carol Loomis has decided to describe chronologically the Buffett phenomenon by abstracting from articles (including her own) and from Buffett statements from 1966 to 2012. Loomis adds some comments to provide a relevant historical context.

The result is an unprecedented biographic time line in which we see how and why Buffett reacted to America's financial ups and downs over the past two generations. As he explained, in April, 2008, during the outset of the Great Recession, "I always say you should get greedy when others are fearful and fearful when others are greedy." Most remarkable is Buffett's steady, long-term hand on his financial tiller, however turbulent the financial waters might be.

To best appreciate the Buffett personal style and core principles I abstract below book highlights from his early years to 2012. (In 1966 Berkshire Hathaway Class A stock was about $22. In mid-September, 2012 it was $133,000.)

BASIC BUFFETT

+ Rejected by Harvard Business School, Buffett went to Columbia Business School to study under Benjamin Graham, whose book, THE INTELLIGENT INVESTOR, has captivated him. ("The first rule of investment is not to lose. The second rule is not to forget the first rule.") Buffett later worked for Graham and ingested the Graham dictum of determining the intrinsic value of companies. Buffett absorbed Graham's focus on 'bargains' which he rigidly defined as stocks that could be bought at no more than two-thirds of their net working capital.
+ "When I got out of Columbia University, I went through Moody's manuals....It worked out so well I actually went through the book [s] a second time. 1998
+ In 1969, Warren Buffett, then thirty-nine, was unhappy with the financial world. He regarded the wild excesses of 1969 as insane. "This is a market I don't understand." He announced in 1969 that, after thirteen years of a spectacularly successful operation, he would close Buffett Partnerships at the end of the year.
+ Professor William Sharp of Stanford referred to Buffett as a "five-sigma event."There is only one chance in 3.5 million of compiling an investment record like Buffett's by chance. 1983
+"Things aren't right just because they are unpopular, but it is a good pond in which to fish. You pay a lot on Wall Street for a cheery consensus." 1985 "Rationality is essential when others are making decisions based on short-term greed or fear....That is when the money is made." 1990
+"You can't do well in investment unless you think independently. And the trouble is, you are neither right nor wrong because people agree with you. You're right because your facts and your reasoning are right....That's all that counts." 2002
+"My problem is I don't get 50 great ideas....I'm lucky if I get one or two." (When he does decide to plunge, Buffett bets big.) 1985 Gates on Buffett: "Warren says that in your life you should swing at only a couple dozen pitches, and he advises doing careful homework so that the few swings you take are hits." 1996
+ Gates on Buffett: "He keeps his schedule free of meetings....He likes to sit in his office and read and think." 1996 Buffett is probably one of a few CEOs in America who spends much of the day reading. Buffett doesn't e-mail (but he is in constant touch by telephone). 2002
+ Buffett speaks to a number of business graduate school groups annually. In response to a student's question ("How do you get your ideas?", Buffett said "I just read. I read all day." 2008
+ Buffett tends to do a few calculations in his head and comes up with a bid. He does not own a calculator. 1988 For years Bill Gates tried to convince Buffett that he should at least think about buying a computer. Buffett finally bought one to play online bridge. 1995
+ "I'm doing what I would most like to do in the world and I've been doing it since I was 20....I choose to work with every person I work with. That ends up the most important factor. I don't interact with people I don't like or admire." 1989
+ "It is far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price." 1990
+ In light of the enormous premium required to buy all of a company, Buffett's strategy has become to obtain partial acquisition. 1992
+ Buffett's policy is to buy stocks at bargain prices and hold them patiently. 1996
+ "I look for businesses in which I can predict what they are going to look like in 10 or 15 or 20 years." 1996 "The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and, above all, the durability of that advantage." 1999
+ "There is no magic to evaluating any financial asset....That method of valuation is exactly what should be used whether you're in 1974 or 1998. If I can't do that, then I don't buy. So I'll wait." 1998
+ "There are a lot of things I'd wish I'd done in hindsight. But I don't think much of hindsight generally in terms of investment decisions. You only get paid for what you do." 1991
+ We have expanded World Headquarters by 252 square feet (17%).1992
+ George Munger, vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, regarding litigation involving his company: "They subpoenaed our staffing papers. Not only didn't we have any staffing papers, we didn't have any staff." 1995
+ Bill Gates on Buffett: "Warren is so humble and yet so good at describing complicated things. At the surface level it's funny for him to quote, say, Mae West, when talking about his investment policies, but, of course, he is really saying something much deeper." 1995
+ American Express CEO Ken Chennault on Buffett: "He embodies this incredible blend of high intellect and business judgment with the ability to emotionally engage with people." 2010
+ Buffett said that being called the 'Atlas of America' really means that "if I do something dumb, I can do it on a very big scale." 2003
+ "Berkshire's goal will be to increase its ownership of first-class businesses. Our first choice will be to own them in their entirety--but we will also be owners by way of holding sizable amounts of marketable stocks. I believe that over an extended period of time this category of investing will prove to be the run-away winner among the three we've examined. More important, it will be by far the safest." 2012

At 83 Buffett still lives in the house he bought at age 25. His meal of choice remains hamburger, French fries, Cherry Coke, and, occasionally, a Dairy Queen sundae.

BUFFETT TORTOISOLOGY

+ "Stocks mean business and owning businesses is much more interesting than owning gold or farmland...if you buy at appropriate prices." 1977
+ "I wasn't against it....It's just that I don't understand the semiconductor business, and I don't go into businesses that I can't understand, that my sister can't understand." 1978
+ Buffett, in his 1982 letter to Berkshire-Hathaway shareholders: regarding recent acquisitions, "managerial intellect wilted in competition with managerial adrenaline."
+ Regarding derivatives, Buffett wrote: "We don't need more people gambling in nonessential instruments identified with the stock market in this country, nor brokers who encourage them to do so." 1987
+ Buffett wanted every CEO to affirm in his annual report that he understands each derivatives contract his company has entered into...."Put that in, and I suspect that you'll fix just about every problem that exists." 1995
+ In his 2002 Berkshire annual report, Buffett describes derivatives as "financial weapons of mass destruction."
+ "Many institutions that publicly report precise market values for their holdings of CDOs and CMOs are in truth reporting fiction. They are marking to model rather than marking to market. The recent meltdown in much of the debt market, moreover, has transformed this process into marking to myth." 2007
+ "Underneath the mathematical elegance--underneath all these betas and sigmas--there was quicksand." 1998
+ "You never know who's swimming naked until the tide goes out." 1998
+ "Unfortunately, the subject of pension assumptions, certainly important though it is, almost never comes up at a corporate board meeting." 2001
+ About the tech bubble, "It was a mass hallucination...by far the biggest in my lifetime." 2002
+ "When a management with a reputation for brilliance tackles a business with a reputation for bad economics, it is usually the reputation of the business that remains intact. You should invest in a business that even a fool can run, because someday a fool will." 2009
+ "Never invest in a business you cannot understand." 2009
+ Buffett wrote, in the 2011 Berkshire-Hathaway annual report: "Gold is a barren asset; bonds are seldom rewarding to the investors; well-chosen productive assets like common stocks and land are the logical prospects to deliver superior returns."
+ In 1997, when Salomon Brothers was on the edge of bankruptcy, Buffett temporarily abandoned his much-cherished lifestyle. He was the only individual who was trusted by the secretary of the treasury and the president of the New York Federal Reserve to step in to prevent a massive financial disaster. For ten months, Buffett, moving to New York, personally rescued Salomon Brothers.

BUFFETT ON PHILANTHROPY

+ In 2006 Buffett announced that he planned to give away his Berkshire-Hathaway fortune (then about $40 billion), much of which would go to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. With a time lag, he required that his contributions be spent rather than added to endowment.
+ He was asked whether it was ironic that the second-richest man in the world was giving this money to the richest man. Buffett expressed supreme faith in the Gates' philanthropic priorities and their ability to implement these effectively. 2006
+ Once his estates was closed, which Buffett estimated would take three years, every dollar of his gifts must be spent within ten years. There were also family foundations and he had made appropriate arrangements for family members. 2007
+ Buffett pledged to give more than 99% of his wealth to charity during his lifetime or after. 2010
+ In June, 2010 Buffett and the Gates announced the Giving Pledge, their initiative to expand the thinking of billionaires about how much to give to charity.
+ By September, 2012 92 billionaires have signed the Giving Pledge. Buffett and the Gates have organized private dinners for billionaires in the United States and as far away as India and China. They remain dedicated to signing up many more billionaires to contribute at least 50% of their wealth to targeted charitable objectives.

Buffett's total charitable gifts ay amount to over $50 billion. (Bill and Melinda Gates' charitable gifts may eventually be of a similar magnitude). The largest previous individual charitable givers, in current dollars, have been Andrew Carnegie ($7.2 billion), John D. Rockefeller ($7.1 billion) and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. ($5.5 billion).

There never will be another Warren Buffett.

A Lot About Which to Dance
By Bruce
Over the years I've read a number of books on or about Berkshire Hathaway and its CEO Warren Buffet. In the interest of full disclosure I am a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder. Universally, what's been written has been insightful and at least to this reviewer both inspirational and educational. `Tap Dancing to Work', compiled by Fortune writer and editor Carol Loomis is no exception.

I'll confess here that I'm a value-driven investor and sleep with a copy of Ben Graham's `Intelligent Investor' in my bedroom. Graham was Buffet's professor at Columbia Business School and afterward his employer. It's the lessons Buffett learned from Graham that started him on his singularly successful career. There are other lessons, too, learned along the way that are chronicled in `Tap Dancing to Work'.

Loomis is Buffet's pro bono editor of his now famous Letter to Shareholders published in the Berkshire Hathaway annual report. Several of these letters along with articles written by Buffet for Fortune and other pieces written by Fortune staff writers and editors about Buffett comprise the content of `Tap Dancing to Work'.

Candidly, there is a bit of a journalistic love fest that frames the book. Nevertheless, it's apparent that care was taken in the selection of the myriad articles spanning some forty plus decades. This is a good book for those who are familiar with Buffett and his background. It does a nice job of reinforcing the values and perspective - both personal and professional - of the man.

For those unfamiliar with Buffett or one seeking a more biographical storyline I would also recommend `The Snowball'.

Life Long Friendships and Money!
By Martin J. Fischer...Creator and Founder- Waiternomics
Easy 5 Star Read! There were a plethora of great points in the book, what I found most interesting was the fact that Warren Buffett used and trusted Carol Loomis enough to edit his annual letters to his shareholders. After learning the significance of these letters I went over to the Berkshire Hathaway website to immerse myself in reading all the letters to the shareholders dating back to the 1970's. Little did I know when I purchased Loomis' book-Serendipity was with me! In less than a month from the writing of this review I will be attending the Annual Shareholders meeting in Omaha for Berkshire Hathaway all because I decided to read "Tap Dancing To Work" by Carol Loomis. If you dig deep and study, this is so much more than a book, its a whole financial lesson in itself.

Handbook of Digital Techniques for High-Speed Design Preface How This Book Is Organized

This book was designed from the beginning to be used as both an engineering textbook in colleges and universities and as an in-depth reference for practicing engineers. Chapters in the book are grouped by topic or function. The chapters would likely be most enjoyable if they were not read in numerical sequence but according to the reader's interests and goals, or the goals of the classroom. Chapters 4 through 9 discuss high-speed signaling technologies in so much detail that reading them all sequentially would result in glazed eyes and cure the worst insomniac!

You can gain a good appreciation for the content by taking a few moments to scan the table of contents, which is titled simply "Contents." This will not only give you an understanding of the book's subject matter but also the wide range of topics related to high-speed digital design. For use as a reference, you can, of course, just flip to the topic of interest.

Most readers will find a quick reading of Chapters 1 through 3 worthwhile. These provide a quick introduction to trends in high-speed design, SerDes and bus technologies, and very basic background information on signal integrity. After reading the first three chapters, you can read chapters according to your interest or the goals of the university course.

Chapter 4 starts off the discussion of high-speed signaling technologies with GTL, GTLP, GTL+, and AGTL+. Chapter 5 introduces LVDS. Chapter 6 talks about the differences among BLVDS, LVDM, and M-LVDS. Chapter 7 details HSTL and SSTL. Chapter 8 categorizes and gives organization to the multitude of ECL devices out in the marketplace today. Chapter 9 discusses CML and explains how it differs from ECL.

Chapter 10 discusses high-speed features of today's Altera and Xilinx FPGAs such as 3.125 Gbps RocketIOs. It also discusses HardCopy devices, a shorter time-to-market and less expensive alternative to ASICs for some applications. Chapter 12 discusses high-speed interconnects and cabling. As we'll mention again below, Chapter 23 models and simulates 5-to-10 Gbps board-to-board interconnects.

Those interested in memory technologies should read Chapter 7 on HSTL and SSTL signaling technologies, which are used by memory devices, and then move on to Chapter 13, which provides an overview of memory technologies. After that, you can elect to read about the memory technologies that interest you the most in Chapters 14 through 18, which discuss the various memory technologies in detail.

Chapter 19 introduces the basic theory behind S-parameters and continues on into the more challenging realm of differential and mixed-mode S-parameters. N-port, mixed-mode S-parameters are discussed in the Appendix to Chapter 23. Given that all of today's high-speed serial links are differential in nature, differential and mixed-mode S-parameters have become very relevant topics and are frequently used today in the modeling of high-speed systems.

Chapter 20 discusses TDR and TDT, time-domain reflectometry and time-domain transmission. These techniques are also in frequent use today in both the simulation and testing of high-speed circuit boards.

Three-and-a-half chapters are dedicated to fiber optics due to its increasing importance in high-speed design. Chapter 11 is a broad introduction to fiber optics. Chapter 28 discusses electrical optical circuit boards and Chapter 24 discusses modeling and simulation of fiber-optic transceivers. The second half of Chapter 31 discusses the testing and measurement of optical systems in Section 31.6, which starts on page 880.

Two chapters introduce modeling and simulation and four other chapters provide major, detailed design examples. Chapter 21 introduces modeling with IBIS. Chapter 22 introduces tools from Mentor Graphics Corporation and talks about the flow of the design process. Chapter 23 discusses the advances in design, modeling, simulation, and validation of board-to-board 5-to-10 Gbps interconnects through an actual example. As mentioned before, Chapter 24 discusses modeling and simulation of fiber-optic transceivers, and Chapter 26 is an excellent design example which uses BLVDS SerDes devices. Chapter 27 is dedicated entirely to an example of designing 3.125 Gbaud high-speed serial links using Motorola's WarpLink serial devices. Chapter 25, while not presenting a detailed design example, does discuss every aspect of designing with LVDS.

Four chapters discuss LVDS and Bus LVDS. As stated before, Chapter 5 discusses the LVDS signaling standard and Chapter 6 discusses the BLVDS, LVDM, and M-LVDS signaling standards. Chapter 25 discusses how to design using LVDS and Chapter 26 is an excellent example of a detailed design using BLVDS SerDes devices.

Chapters 29 and 30 discuss the emerging protocols and technology behind RapidIO (Chapter 29) and PCI-Express (Chapter 30). These chapters provide an insight into what is being done to address the issues of faster and faster data rates in embedded systems, and ever-increasing bus speeds and system architecture complexity.

Finally, Chapter 31 is an informative discussion on the high-speed aspects of laboratory and test equipment, including such topics as equivalent-time oscilloscopes.

Throughout this textbook, there are numerous simulation examples and discussions of modeling. The reader is referred to the index for a detailed listing of "simulations" and "models."

This Textbook Was Written with Educational Institutions in Mind

This textbook was prepared from the beginning to be used not only by practicing engineers in the field working with high-speed digital electronics, but by instructors at universities and colleges who wish to teach high-speed digital design fundamentals to their students. High-speed digital design concepts and techniques can no longer be left for students to learn on the job after graduation. Today's clock rates in the hundreds of megahertz for typical applications and in the multigigahertz range for SerDes applications make this knowledge basic and fundamental to any electrical engineering degree.

Prior to this textbook, there has been no suitable textbook available from which to teach these required concepts. The handful of books written on this subject do not make good textbooks for a number of reasons. Two-thirds of these books have no exercises — no homework problems — and leave the extremely time-consuming task of developing these problems to the instructor who could better spend his or her time assisting students. Many of these books have no discussion of the various high-speed signaling technologies such as SSTL (Stub-Series-Terminated Logic), CML (Current-Mode Logic), or proprietary signaling technologies such as Motorola's controlled-impedance WarpLink technology. Today's CML is not a synonym for ECL as was the case two decades ago.

Many of these unsuitable-for-the-classroom books do not provide the basic background material on which high-speed design concepts are based. For example, many of them include no discussion of SerDes devices, double data rate (DDR) and quad data rate (QDR) devices, and no discussion of embedded clocks or echo clocks used by memory devices. They do not provide any discussion of the wide range of high-speed memory devices available today — SigmaRAM, Fast Cycle RAM, Network DRAM, Reduced Latency DRAM, Zero Bus Turnaround SRAM, and so on — at all. These books provide no background in TDR (time-domain reflectometry), which has changed considerably from years ago when it was used to find faults on power cables. The books that do mention it assume the reader is versatile in making TDR measurements. They provide no discussion of S-parameters, let alone the differential and mixed-mode S-parameters in use today, and leave it for the reader to hunt down microwave books or application notes for material on these subjects. Many books do not discuss how jitter is measured and how jitter masks are created and used.

Some of these books are too specialized and leave out the broad scope that this field invloves. Two signal integrity books I have seen are so mathematically rigorous that any course taught using them would be a math course and not an electrical engineering or design course. One is so mathematically rigorous that I believe it would intimidate the great majority of math professors as well, and is just not appropriate for an engineering or digital design course.

Of critical importance today are the EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tools that are used to generate high-speed digital designs. Most books make no mention of these, let alone discuss design constraints and how constraints are implemented and integrated into the design. Today, also, fiber optics is taking on increasing importance in high-speed designs and, as with the many other subjects mentioned above, most other high-speed design and signal integrity books do not touch on this subject.

Enough negativity — these other books do make excellent references for the practicing engineer and allow the reader to research the topics presented in great detail.

University Courses for Which This Book Is Suitable

This book is suitable for use in a one- or two-semester course in high-speed digital design or in a one-semester course in the use of high-speed memory devices. Six of the 31 chapters are dedicated to memory devices. The material could be taught as either a junior-level or senior-level undergraduate course in that there is a minimum of math throughout the book. The material could also be taught at a more accelerated pace at the graduate level.

Nice synthesis, very useful
By Adi Oltean
IMHO, this is an nice book that can guide the reader in the vast and confusing field of signaling standards, and not only that. The book does a decent job in exposing, contrasting and comparing dozens (hundreds?) of technologies that can make one dizzy just in enumerating them (GTL and variations, HSTL/SSTL, ECL and all its variations, CML, etc.).

One thing I like about the book is that it attempts to group together (probably for the first time) information that can be traditionally found in tons of very disparate application notes, standard descriptions, and even datasheets. Second, I like its exercises at the end of each chapter, which IMHO are necessary if you really want to remember something. Third, I like the combination of standard expositions, and practical presentations of a few concrete components (such as TLK2501)

What I didn't like was the shameless copy&paste of large portions of text from the various sources (standards, etc). That aspect could really use some work. Some concepts are exposed insufficiently, some are exposed multiple times (even inconsistently). For example, the ac/dc distinction for HI/LO input is briefly (and confusingly) mentioned on SSTL_3 is briefly re-exposed on SSTL_2 and then properly re-exposed in SSTL_18. I think some serious compiling work is needed here, maybe in the next edition? Second, just copying from a standard leaves the reader confused about the stuff not covered in the standard. For example on HSTL, what is the exact meaning of differential inputs given that the standard does not specify any differential requirements for the output?

To conclude, I really enjoyed reading the book but due to its shortcomings I gave it (reluctantly) four stars.

[update] Forgot to mention an important thing - many of the quoted articles/white papers are around 2002-2004 so you should expect that a lot of the book's content is more or less out of date. For one thing, the SerDes transceiver technology has vastly improved meanwhile (speeds of 12.5 Gbps are pretty common, not the typical 3.125 Gbps which was top-of-the-line a decade ago when the book was shipped). Same can be said about the chapters on memory technologies, fibre, FPGA, etc. Still, I found the book pretty useful as many of these standards and components are still in use today.
