A neurosurgeon’s first-person account of his near-death experience after an E. coli meningitis-related seizure and seven-day coma will reassure afterlife believers, though it is unlikely to convince skeptics. Alexander’s credentials are impressive: medical school at Duke and 15 years at Harvard-affiliated hospitals. But to agnostics and atheists, Alexander may not come across as a completely objective observer. He writes that he attended his Episcopal church even as he questioned how God, heaven, and an afterlife could exist, yet the heaven he describes seeing certainly seems like a biblical one; a typical line is, “the visual beauty of the silvery bodies of those scintillating beings above.” His story includes interesting asides about past struggles with alcohol and with adoption. (His birth mother delivered him when she was 16 and for years did not want to meet him.) But the book mostly focuses on religion. I am skeptical about his claims and the narrative.

I'm a medical student from the medical school that Dr. Alexander attended who also does neurological research so I was naturally interested. The thing immediately read as the sort of dribble that a top notch neurosurgeon wouldn't have time to write unless he was down and out. If you read the recent esquire piece on the whole thing you will see what I mean. Got about halfway done and could tell that a lot of this was built up as a ridiculous story.
I have been fascinated with NDEs for some time. If you really want a good primer on them there are better resources out there such as Evidence of the Afterlife by Jeffrey Long (another MD) which is not nearly as sensational, but much more objective.

Riveting; Will Inspire Faith AND Questions

This is an utterly riveting account. I first purchased this as a Kindle book back when it was released, but have just purchased the physical book as well, so that I can lend it out.
Dr. Alexander's story will inspire not only faith that there is an afterlife, but questions about the very nature of life itself. How, for example, can there be a terrestrial world with terrestrial creatures, such as the girl on the butterfly wing? What about sound? Visuals? Aren't these phenomena that require eyes and ears to apprehend? Or, is it consciousness - both centered in the body and outside of it - that produces these experiences?
(To supplement your reading: Esquire magazine published an article purporting to "debunk" Dr. Alexander's truthful account of his experience. Be sure and do a web search of IANDS (the International Association for Near Death Studies's statement on that article. It debunks the debunker.)

astounding and amazing

This is an astounding book. This man is a neurosurgeon and believed in science and just the material and tangible and just what his eyes could see. He did not believe in life after passing over. He now believes in God. He has had a complete reversal of what he believed in. The way that he writes about his experience is just amazing to me. He is profound in his thinking and his way with words. This book is so readable and enjoyable. I got it yesterday and could not put it down and finished reading it in just a few short hours. His way with words are like magic. This is a must read.
